Become a certified dental assistant

Dental Assistants are important members of the dental health care team who work with dentists in the delivery of dental care to patients. Dental Assistants utilize their knowledge and clinical skills to provide dental care for patients in every practice of dentistry, while using their interpersonal skills to motivate and educate patients on methods to prevent oral disease and to maintain sound oral health. 

Indiana University School of Dentistry offers a full-time dental assisting undergraduate certificate program in an immersive dental environment at the School of Dentistry located on the IU Indianapolis campus. Upon graduation, graduates are prepared for:

  • Assisting in general and specialty practices such as orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, pediatrics and endodontics
  • Exposing and processing images
  • Carving dental restorations (fillings)
  • Obtaining impressions and bite registrations for prostheses
  • Applying topical anesthetics and assisting with anesthetic administration
  • Educating patients concerning home care after dental procedures and oral healthcare
  • Completing preventive procedures: dental sealants, coronal polishing, fluoride application, etc.

The dental assisting program provides students a rich clinical experience, includes clinic rotations in general dentistry and dental specialities, and provides the opportunity for students to learn, work and network with a variety of dental professionals. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

Certificate requirements

The following licenses and certificates are available to graduates of the dental assisting program:

  • Dental Radiographer License (Indiana Department of Health)
  • Indiana Certificate for Coronal Polishing and Caries Prevention Procedures for Dental Auxiliaries
  • Didactic course for Administration of Nitrous Oxide for Dental Auxiliaries
  • Certificate of completion for laboratory & clinical Expanded Restorative Functions (EFDA)

Students are required to take three Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) exams to become a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA).

Degree requirements and courses

The dental assisting program is a full-time, two-semester program that requires the completion of 33 credit hours. The curriculum consists of 15 required classes that include approximately 1,000 hours of lectures, labs, and clinical experiences. All instruction takes place at the School of Dentistry, located on the IU Indianapolis campus in downtown Indianapolis. Students are required to complete at least 300 clinical hours in order to earn the certificate.

The dental assisting certificate program also prepares students who are interested in further their education in dentistry or would like expand their career opportunities by earing a bachelor's degree.

To be eligible to apply to the dental assisting program, you must meet certain minimum skill standards and the admission requirements, which include:

  • Admission to IU Indianapolis as an undergraduate student
  • Cumulative and science GPAs of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Completion of at least two science courses

After admission to IU Indianapolis, you will submit a separate application for your selected dental assisting program.

Costs

Tuition and fee costs vary depending on residency and the number of credit hours taken each semester. You can search the IU Indianapolis master fee list to find out what fees you’ll have to pay as a dental assisting student. However, keep in mind that there are additional program and clinical fees for dental assisting students that may not be included in the estimate.

 

Financial aid

Dental assisting students are eligible to receive financial aid. However, upon admission to IU Indianapolis, you will be classified as a pre–dental assisting student until you are accepted into the dental assisting programs. Pre–dental assisting students do not qualify for financial aid, so you will be not be awarded any aid until you have been admitted to the program.
