How much does it cost to attend the School of Dentistry?
Your tuition and fee costs will depend on several factors, including your academic program and your residency classification (whether you’re considered an in-state or out-of-state student). Remember that you may have to pay additional School of Dentistry program and clinical fees that aren’t reflected in the estimate. Cost of attendance
The cost of attendance (COA) components are determined by law (Higher Education Act, Sec. 472) and the types of costs that may be included are specific. The COA is intended to be an estimate of the student’s educational expenses for their period of enrollment. Allowable costs include:
- tuition and fees
- housing and food
- books and supplies
- transportation
- miscellaneous personal expenses
- dependent care during periods of class time, study time, field work, commuting time
- the one-time direct costs of obtaining a first professional license
Cost of attendance (COA) change
If you are requesting to increase the overall COA, the following items may be taken into consideration:
- vehicle repair/mileage expenses
- recent computer purchase
- dependent care expenses
- unusually high off campus living costs
Adjustments may not be made for spouse’s, elective medical procedures, moving expenses, etc. If you feel the Cost of Attendance Appeal form does not fully reference your special circumstance please submit a typed narrative explaining the situation with supporting documentation and we will review your situation.

What options do I have for paying for my education?
Your financial aid options, like your tuition and fee costs, will depend on your academic program.
D.D.S. students are eligible for several forms of federal financial aid, including:
- Federal Direct Loans
- Federal Direct PLUS Loans
- Health Professions Student Loans
- National Health Service Corps scholarships and loan repayment
Another option is service-based scholarships, which cover tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend for students who agree to provide dentistry services to members of the U.S. military or in underserved areas of the U.S. or U.S. territories after graduation. In addition, the School of Dentistry offers a number of donor-funded scholarships.
Financial aid is awarded to eligible IU-IDP students on the basis of financial need, citizenship, and federal law. You can learn more about who is eligible for financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education.
Federal student loans are available to qualified students in the M.S., M.S.D., and Ph.D. programs. A limited number of small scholarships are awarded by the school’s academic departments.

Special information for dental assisting students
IU Indianapolis dental assisting students are eligible to receive financial aid. However, upon your admission to IU Indianapolis, you will be classified as a pre–dental assisting student until you are accepted into one of the dental assisting programs. Pre–dental assisting students do not qualify for financial aid, so you will be not be awarded any aid until you have been admitted to one of the programs.

Take the first step
No matter which academic program you’re applying to, the first step in being considered for financial aid is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
IU Indianapolis uses this to determine your eligibility for financial aid, calculate your need, award your aid, and prepare your financial aid notification (FAN).
The FAFSA becomes available October 1 of each year, and you should submit it by the priority deadline of March 10.
